3 signs your company's backup is not safe
Most backup problems are discovered on the day you need the backup. You have a backup. But are you sure it will save you?
1. All copies are in the same office
Fire, theft or ransomware can hit them all at once. An external drive next to the server does not protect you from fire, theft, flooding or ransomware, which encrypts everything connected to the network.
What to do: keep at least one copy off site or in the cloud, separate from your network.
2. You have never tested a restore
A backup is only worth something if it can be restored. Files often turn out to be incomplete or corrupted exactly when you need them.
What to do: run a test restore at regular intervals, for example every quarter.
3. Nobody knows whether yesterday's backup ran
Without alerts, it may have stopped months ago. If it runs by hand, or fails without telling anyone, nobody will notice.
What to do: automate it and set up an alert for every failure.
The 3-2-1 rule
The simple rule we recommend to every business:
- 3 copies of your data
- on 2 different storage media
- with 1 copy off site
